Seed Starting
In January, the Community Gardens Greenhouse places orders for seeds.  Seed starting
begins in February in order to produce the stock to be sold in the spring. Sheila  is managing
the 2008 Marigold planting program. Other volunteers will be involved in growing other types of
annuals and herbs.

The UTEC organization is taking on greater responsibilities of the daily internal weather
conditions at the greenhouse in Spring 2008 in partnership with us.  This group will be growing
their farm crops as they have in the past.

Ross, another volunteer, manages a seed starting project that specializes in Cambodian
vegetables. Ross has offered to learn the mechanics of heat and water and be the watchdog
for the weather conditions inside the greenhouse.
INSIDE THE GREENHOUSE
Grown in Lowell
The Community Gardens Greenhouse is an all-volunteer
organization. We have members who have made
long-term
commitments to the growth and development of the
greenhouse and
seasonal volunteers who work on specific
projects during the growing season.

The greenhouse takes on projects based on staff availability
and funding received through grants and organizing fund
raisers.
Spring clean-up
The Community Gardens Greenhouse maintains the greenhouse and Signature Garden on Aiken Street, as well as the
Mary J. Bacigalupo Victorian Garden in partnership with the Lowell National Historic Park, and the Garden of Big Ideas and
Earthly Delights in partnership with the Revolving Museum.

We know that each year we will be cleaning up these gardens in preparation for the growing season. It is at this time that
we need the most help.

Earth Day
Over 300 people attended Earth Day in 2007.  Contact us if you want to participate.

Spring Fling
The annual Spring Fling  is scheduled for May 17 at Mack Plaza. Volunteer to work the event, donate plants, print our flier
and post or tell a friend.
Our projects vary from year to year so it isn't easy to predict what's in the queue.  Contact us, to find out what's going on.

Mulching, weeding, and feeding continues at the
Signature Garden, Victorian Garden, and Garden of Big Ideas and Earthly
Delights.
Summer
Fall clean-up
Fall clean up is generally restricted to the Community Gardens Greenhouse Signature Garden and the greenhouse. By
autumn, all the garden projects that we have worked on have been completed and turned over to their respective
stakeholders.  The stakeholders are neighborhood groups, church groups, or school groups who have accepted
ownership of their garden project.
Autumn
Garden maintenance committees are being formed now through the
Keep Lowell Beautiful Beautification sub-committee in partnership
with the Community Gardens Greenhouse.  Recruitment of Lowell and
area residents is an ongoing effort.
Volunteers are welcome anytime.

Meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month, from 6:00 PM -
7:30 PM and are generally held at the greenhouse. During late fall
and winter months, meetings are held off-site.   Access the Community
Gardens Greenhouse
Calendar to keep abreast of meeting times,
locations, schedule.
Winter
Earth Day
The Community Gardens Greenhouse sponsors Earth Day  which is held in April. If you
Spring
would like to help organize this event, please contact us.

Spring Fling
Planning for the annual Spring Fling starts in the winter. The event is held in May and kicks-off
our fund raising activities. The sale is held at the Mack Plaza (rain or shine). We sell plants
grown at the greenhouse, as well as perennials donated by our
Perennial Partners.  Contact us,
if you would like to
participate or donate.
Watering Program
Volunteer to take on watering responsibilities both inside
and outside the greenhouse according to weather
conditions.  The program will work the same as it did in
2007.
