Spearheading residential composting
"It's tempting to think of Lowell for its urban qualities. The confluence of arteries into downtown is not only paved roadways,
but arms of the Merrimack River through canals. Eastern Longear Sunfish nest in gravel in shallow water at Swamp Locks,
where wild ducklings skitter nervously. Equally reclusive, Great Blue Heron take prey from locks and spillways. With nature
so close at hand some downtown residents are finding ways to coexist, reducing solid waste by composting organic
kitchen scraps. Banana peels, coffee grounds, wilted vegetables, and a host of other vegetable products are collected in
compost bins where insects and organisms reduce the waste to a fraction of its mass. This process heats up the compost
to 140 °F eventually creating nutrient rich soil that can be added back into local gardens. Community Gardens Greenhouse
is site of one pilot residential compost program."

Garden maintenance committees are being formed now through the Keep Lowell Beautiful Beautification sub-committee in
partnership with the Community Gardens Greenhouse. Recruitment of Lowell and area residents is an ongoing effort.
Volunteers are welcome anytime.
Meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month, from 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM and are generally held at the greenhouse.
During late fall and winter months, meetings are held off-site. Access the Community Gardens Greenhouse Calendar to
keep abreast of meeting times, locations, schedule.
