Hosted by the Community Gardens Greenhouse

Earth Day 2009
Thank you to all who participated in making this event a success.
|

The third annual Earth Day Festival was held on April 19, but planning started long before that
date. We were especially blessed this year to have received such generous donations from
many businesses, entertainers, and volunteers.
Exhibitors - Thank you taking the time off of work, or working on a weekend, creating
presentations, workshops, and demonstrations to bring to the event
Donors - Thank you for making such generous donations in this tough economy. Your
donations enabled us to present this educational, community event free of charge. Many visitors
expressed appreciation in not having to spend money.
Sponsors - Thank you for supporting our Earth Day program. Your generosity made the program
possible.
Entertainers - This was the first year we were able to offer a variety of entertainment. Thank you
for donating your services.
Volunteers - As always we truly appreciate the hard work that you put in throughout the season
to get us to where we need to be in time.

Earth Day opened with Boy Scout Pack 80, Den 7, of Dracut raising the flag and leading with the
Pledge of Allegiance. Councilwoman Rita Mercier and greenhouse operations manager Deb
Harding said a few words to open the event.
This year's entertainers were soloist Lexi Steere, Garth the Girl, Matt Murray, harmonica player
Larry Harding, and Cliff Whalen. The Lowell High Drama club dressed as bees, buzzing around
the venue, to ensure that visitors "BEE Informed" about Earth Day.
We had several activities: nature frames, tissue paper flowers, composting workshop, face
painting, button making, seed ball making, making wooden planters, garden art painting, and
grocery bag decorating.
Food & beverages were served this year thanks to our donors. Chef Mike, CGG's resident chef
and basil expert, made a tasty vegetarian tomato basil soup with Farmer Dave's greek basil.
Bob Gagnon made a savory chicken soup with a solar powered stove. Jay Pokorski and the
Farmer family manned the grill and served the food.
The 2009 Plant a Row for the
Hungry campaign was kicked
off by giving away starter kits
containing seeds, row markers,
and marketing material. Over
50 kits given away!
